Top 5 Innovative IT Insurance Services

INNOVATIVE IT INSURANCE SERVICES IN A CONSERVATIVE INDUSTRY?

While insurance is not known as an extremely innovative or exciting industry, new technology has created a platform for a number of exciting insurance information technology (IT) services for both consumers and insurance providers. Here we provide an overview of the top 5 innovative IT insurance services.

#1: PAY AS YOU DRIVE

Pay-as-you-drive insurance calculates premiums according to an individual’s driving profile, rewarding secure driving while tracking and increasing premiums on dangerous driving styles. Drivers who constantly speed, brake suddenly or drive in bad weather conditions (e.g. snow, rain) find themselves paying higher premiums than those who follow the rules of the road. A “black box” device installed in the car tracks key parameters of the journey and transfers the data to the insurance company, who then regulates the premium rate.

Some insurance companies already offering simplified versions of Pay-as-you-drive solutions:

  • Aviva
  • Hollard
  • Allianz Lloyd Adriatico

Companies such as Accenture are intensively research this topic to be able offer new solutions.

#2: SOCIAL BENCHMARKING

Online insurance quote platforms, such as Kanetix, all offer access to a limited number of insurance providers, allowing consumers to analyze only a subset of prices, which are based on the insurance provider’s data.

Social benchmarking of insurance premiums offers independent, consumer-generated data across all insurance providers. As consumers share information about their insurance spending, they can access the collective experience of other consumers, identifying if they pay too much and who offers the best prices for peers with a similar insurance profile.

An example of such a service is the InsurEye Peer Comparison tool, which covers not only spending information for online insurance products (20%-30% of the total market), but also for insurance offered directly by insurers, brokers, and agents.

#3: ONLINE POLICY MANAGEMENT

Online banking has become the norm, but online insurance management? Personal banking finance management tools and other useful online IT services are available for consumers for free. Finally, the insurance industry has started to close the gap. Now many insurance providers offer online and mobile tools to help consumers to manage their policies and provide customer support. One example is TD Insurance, which offers an online service allowing customers to perform many tasks on their own, eliminating the need to call a service line. Examples of such tasks are:

  • Modify contact information
  • Modify a car policy
  • Modify a Home Policy
  • Modify a payment plan
  • File a claim

A number of insurance providers both in Canada and the United States offer such tools for their customers e.g. TD Insurance, Nationwide, USAA, and more.

#4: MOBILE DEVICE CLAIMS

Collisions don’t happen while you are sitting at home in front of the computer. Instead, many insurance companies have developed solutions to help customers deal with their collisions and claims situations on their mobile devices. Typical example of mobile application offers customers many handy functionalities reducing headaches in case of an accident. A typical set of features for such an IT solution includes:

  • List of tips in case of an accident
  • Capture all required accident info (incl. photos)
  • Find / order towing service
  • Find a repair shop
  • Initiate a claim process
  • Check claim status
  • Find an insurance agent

Such apps are usually free and users can start using them directly after downloading from an app store. Especially useful is the ability to take a picture of an accident to document what exactly happened and estimate the potential level of damage.

#5: ADJUDICATION FROM A DISTANCE

If you’ve ever had a road accident, you surely know the range of emotions you experience: fear for the own health and those who are in the car, concerns about financial impact on future insurance premiums, not being sure what to do and in what order, dealing with police, towing services, another car driver etc.

Some companies, e.g. RBC Insurance, have so-called Road Angels – insurance experts who physically arrive at the accident location to support the customer.

Instead of sending an agent to a scene, IT insurance services could potentially provide long distance assistance via video. Modern smartphones are capable of transmitting two-way video, making it possible to show an insurance expert what has happened, and at the same time making the customer feel more secure.

Videoconference providers such as Skype already offer these technical functionalities, and Apple has FaceTime, a new video chat for its iPhone users. It’s likely only a matter of time before this technology results in a mature IT insurance service.

How a Residential Locksmith Assists to Secure Your Home?

A residential locksmith exists in the industry for many decades providing different types of assistance. House owners require the help of these services at various critical stages. Over the past years, the services of home locksmiths have reached new heights with the development of the modern technology. Their services vary from duplication of the keys to programming sophisticated home security systems nowadays. In fact, without the help of a professional locksmith Expert, it will be practically impossible to assure the safety of your residence.

Mentioned below are some of the key services offered by locksmiths to assure the security of the houses.

Duplication of keys

Generally, key duplication is the most common and the basic service offered by locksmiths. Over the past decades, with the development of the technology, different types of locks are being introduced and the functionality of the keys has become complicated. However, a professional locksmith can duplicate any of these keys from basic ones to programmable keys.

Repairing locks

Or some other locks may get broken over the time and therefore a huge demand has arisen in the industry for lock repair works. Again modern home door locks have become exceptionally sophisticated; some of which even controlled over mobile apps. Therefore, it has become a prerequisite for modern locksmiths to know about these automated and programmable locks too. Thanks to the developments, modern vendors are capable of providing home door lock repair work from basics to hi-end security systems.

Lock replacements

Due to various reasons people may have to replace their locks. Moving to a new house, security upgrade or suspicious security vulnerability are common reasons for a house owner to look for a lock replacement. When a particular lock is used for a longer period, the necessity for lock replacement will arise. No matter how sophisticated the locking system, you may need to replace it once you have used it for a long time. Going beyond the simple home lock install process, modern residential locksmiths are capable of replacing the entire security system with programmable keys and locks.

Emergency lockout service

Due to busy life schedules, people get locked out from their residences and offices quite often. Upon such situation, only a locksmith can provide you the most effective service for the delight of the client and get him out of the situation. Most of the Home locksmiths rightly offer 24/7 emergency lockout service considering the demand.

Security enhancements

Modern residences need modern security strategies considering the advance threats available in the society. Conventional unsecure locks hardly can withstand the new level threats. As an effective way to face a new level of threats houses need advanced security options. Contemporary locksmiths are capable of enhancing the security systems to match the requirements of the modern society.

Apart from the house you live, you can enhance the security of the areas like garages and storage facilities too. Once the house’s security is strengthened, you can enjoy low insurance premiums as a great value addition. Before hiring a residential locksmith expert, however, it is wise to look for aspects like industry experience, skills, previous work records etc.

Kiteboarding: Preventative Maintenance

Kiteboarding is true to my lifestyle, and true to life, if you exercise a bit of preventative maintenance then your equipment will fly better, last longer, and provide you with a lot more enjoyment. Kiteboarding equipment is not the cheapest to buy, it certainly is not like going to Wall-Mart and buying a one-line decorative kite. The gear costs a good chunk of change, and it costs as much as it is worth, trust me. Just like any other valued treasure in your possession, you want to keep it in good condition. That way it is ready when you want to use it, and it last longer. You can’t complain with that. Kiteboarding does not have to much preventative maintenance. Its not like a car where you have to change moving parts all the time. To keep your kite as we say “crispy,” just follow a few common sense steps.

Within the realm of Kiteboarding there are some categories of maintenance to keep in mind. Those categories are the kite itself, the kite pump, the bar lines and safety system, the harness, and the board. Lets take a look at each one individually.

The Kite Itself: Storage. when you are not using your kite is is best to have it neatly rolled up and in the appropriate sized bag. But more than that you want to roll your kite up without sand or moisture on the kite. If you pack it away wet and dirty then that way it will stay in the bad. Your kite will discolor and the fabrics will begin to wear from the sand and water rubbing against the kite while inside the bag. So please, put your kite back in its bag, dry and clean if you can. This means sometimes letting your kite dry in the sun after a session before you pack it up. It is also clever to carry a clean rag with you. Some soft material like an old cotton T-shirt that you can use to wipe off the dirt. Clean and dry the kite while it is inflated. Once every few weeks, after your session, inspect the kite thoroughly. Look at the bridles, leader lines, and pigtails for signs that the ropes are in good condition. If they are not then change them before you snap a bridle in the middle of a session and do further damage to your kite. Also, routinely check the canopy and stitching for any tears or pinholes. Fix these as they occur. Kite maintenance on the water. Do not self-launch over rough terrain, try not to crash your kite to hard. If you are uncertain of what to do, just let go of the bar and let the kite come down gently. Most people who hold on the bar when they should let go end up with giant rips in the canopy of their kite, or they blow up a bladder. Speaking of the bladder. Every now and then please check your valves for slow leaks. This is a common problem that if spotted in time will prevent a session with an unhappy ending.

The Kite Pump: This piece of equipment is neglected by most riders. That is so foolish. The pump is the most important piece of equipment to take care of. It has the most moving parts, the most fragile construction, and you need it, absolutely need it, to pump up your kite if you want a session. Maintaining a pump is very easy, and very hard at the same time. All you have to do is pay attention to it. Keep the pump attached to your kite back, but leave the pump hose detached. When you leave the hose attached and the pump falls onto its side then the pump tube tares easily and you end up with a leaky pump. Nothing is more frustrating than a leaky pump. If only attach the hose to the pump when you inflate your kite then that tube will last a lot longer and you will save yourself much aggravation. Next, pumps need to have a clean and lubricated interior. If you dissect your pump, (by unscrewing the top,) you will find that a rubber o-ring supplies the airtight seal, and that a couple of gasket valves allow the double action of the pump. If your pump is sticking or squeaking, or you notice that only strokes of one direction push air, then you will need to open your pump. Unscrew the top, pull out the handle, clean the o-ring and smear some Vaseline around it. Then look at the gasket valves, most of the time one of them has been knocked out of its groove. Simply put it back in the groove. Put everything back together, and your pump will be good for another few months.

Lines: Before each session you walk-out the lines. As you walk them out check them for any inconsistency. I’m talking about knots in the line, frays or pinches flattened out spots. Especially check the pigtail where you connect the kite to your lines. This part of the lines takes the most abuse, and it is a good idea to carry an extra set so you can replace them as needed. If you have a knot in your lines the best way to get therm out is with your own saliva. No joke, put the knot in your mouth, use your back molars to gnaw on the line. Work your saliva into the lines for a few minutes. Then try to work the knot out with your fingers.

Bar: The control bar is where all of your safety equipment is located. If there is one piece of equipment, besides the pump, to keep pristine, the bar is it. It does not take a lot of time to inspect your bar, so you can do this every few sessions. Look at your “throw” line to make sure it has not frayed. If it has then replace it. Check your leader lines to make sure they are okay. Check your chicken loop by testing the quick release. Make sure that you can actually disable your kite. Don’t just pop the chicken loop and put it back together. Finally inspect your power strap. Run a routine check on your bar once a week or so and it will never fail you. If you have a pulley bar remember to check your pulley’s.

Harness: This is an easy one. Does your harness still fit? Does it still feel comfortable? Are the straps frayed? Any stitching out of place or missing? Is your grab handle tattered? Are the metal parts securely fasted by their bolts? Is your spreader bar in good shape? If you address those questions then you will know what kind of shape your harness is in. Personally I try to get a new harness every year. They break down faster than the rest of the equipment, and I like to be comfortable on the water.

The Board: To maintain your board is easy. Check the screws frequently and make sure they are all tightly fastened. If the footpads wear or the straps wear then you need to replace them. Keep it clean between sessions. Rinse it off so sand doesn’t build up under the food pad. Adjust the straps from time to time to prevent them from getting stiff in one position. Don’t jump around with your board on your feet while you are on land.

So now you know some of the more common ways your gear will break down, and how to prevent further damage. Its always easier to replace a harness, or a line, or a pigtail, or a bridle, than it is to replace your kite.

A Brief Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

We all know that Siri, Google Now, and Cortana are all intelligent digital personal assistants on various platforms (iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile). In short, they help find useful information when you ask for it is using your voice; you can say “Where’s the nearest Indian restaurant?”, “What’s on my schedule today?”, “Remind me to call Mom or Dad at eight o’clock,” and the assistant will respond by finding information, relaying information from your phone, or sending commands to other apps.

AI is important in these apps, as they collect information on your requests and use that information to better recognize your speech and serve you results that are tailored to your preferences. Microsoft says that Cortana “continually learns about its user” and that it will eventually develop the ability to anticipate users’ needs. Virtual personal assistants process a huge amount of data from a variety of sources to learn about users and be more effective in helping them organize and track their information.

Your smartphone, calculator, video games, car, bank & your house all use artificial intelligence daily; sometimes it’s obvious what its’ doing, like when you ask Siri to get you directions to the nearest gas station. Sometimes it’s less obvious, like when you make an abnormal purchase on your credit card and don’t get a fraud alert from your bank. AI is everywhere, and it’s making a huge difference in our lives every day.

So, we can say that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer sciences that emphasizes the development of intelligence machines, thinking and working like humans. For example, speech recognition, problem-solving, learning and planning. Today, Artificial Intelligence is a very popular subject that is widely discussed in the technology and business circles. Many experts and industry analysts argue that AI or machine learning is the future – but if we look around, we are convinced that it’s not the future – it is the present.

Yes, the technology is in its initial phase and more and more companies are investing resources in machine learning, indicating a robust growth in AI products and apps soon. Artificial intelligence or machine intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems.

What is the use of AI?

Vision systems. The need to interpret, fully understand and make sense of visual input on the computer, i.e. AI is used to try and interpret and understand an image – industrial, military use, satellite photo interpretation.

What is the purpose of AI?

When AI researchers first began to aim for the goal of artificial intelligence, a main interest was human reasoning… The specific functions that are programmed to a computer may be able to account for many of the requirements that allow it to match human intelligence

What is an ASI artificial intelligence?

A superintelligence is a hypothetical agent that possesses intelligence far surpassing that of the brightest and most gifted human minds.

What is the goal of AI?

Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is applied when a machine mimics “cognitive” functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as “learning” and “problem solving”. General intelligence is among the field’s long-term goals.

What are the different types of AI?

We need to overcome the boundaries that define the four different types of artificial intelligence, the barriers that separate machines from us – and us from them.

Type I AI: Reactive machines

Type II AI: Limited memory

Type III AI: Theory of mind

Type IV AI: Self-awareness

Is computer vision part of AI?

Artificial intelligence and computer vision share other topics such as pattern recognition and learning techniques. Consequently, computer vision is sometimes seen as a part of the artificial intelligence field or the computer science field in general.

Is machine learning the same as artificial intelligence?

Increasingly, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are cropping up as solutions for handling data. The two are often used interchangeably, and although there are some parallels, they’re not the same thing.

What are the fields of artificial intelligence?

· List of applications

· Optical character recognition.

· Handwriting recognition.

· Speech recognition.

· Face recognition.

· Artificial creativity.

· Computer vision, Virtual reality and Image processing.

· Diagnosis (AI)

· Game theory and Strategic planning.

How important is Artificial Intelligence?

AI is the machines which are designed and programmed in such a manner that they and think and act like a human. Artificial Intelligence becomes the important part of our daily life. Our life is changed by AI because this technology is used in a wide area of day to day services.

For most of us, the most obvious results of the improved powers of AI are neat new gadgets and experiences such as smart speakers, or being able to unlock your iPhone with your face. But AI is also poised to reinvent other areas of life. One is health care. Hospitals in India are testing software that checks images of a person’s retina for signs of diabetic retinopathy, a condition frequently diagnosed too late to prevent vision loss. Machine learning is vital to projects in autonomous driving, where it allows a vehicle to make sense of its surroundings. Artificial intelligence is already present in plenty of applications, from search algorithms and tools you use every day to bionic limbs for the disabled.

Sometimes it seems like every other website, app, or productivity tool is citing AI as the secret ingredient in their recipe for success. What’s less common is an explanation of what AI is, why it’s so cool, and how companies are leveraging it to provide better user experiences. If you don’t know much about AI, the absence of an explanation can be confusing. Today, the field of artificial intelligence is more vibrant than ever and some believe that we’re on the threshold of discoveries that could change human society irreversibly, for better or worse.

Walk! It Is Good for Your Heart

Walking is an intrinsic human function that serves many roles. First of all, it helps clear the mind, pace the thoughts and calm us down. Second, it is a great exercise that helps tone the legs, shed extra weight, improve lung ventilation and overall health. It is also a great way to reduce the risk of heart disease. It temporarily quickens the heart rate, increasing blood circulation through the body and bringing more oxygen to other organs. At the same time, walking increases the lungs’ ability to take in oxygen from the air, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Walking can help slow down the aging process and it works no matter what age you get started. It is low impact, requires no special equipment or skills and can be done at any time of the day and at your own pace. Moreover, you can walk without worrying about the risks usually associated with some vigorous forms of exercise.

When we walk, we carry our own body weight. It is called weight-bearing exercise and some of its benefits are:

  • Increased heart and lung fitness
  • Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Improved management of hypertension, diabetes, muscular and joint stiffness
  • Improved blood lipid profile
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Reduced body fat.

To get overall as well as the heart health benefits, it is necessary to walk at least 30 minutes per day as briskly as possible. Briskly means that you can still talk, but can be slightly puffing. It doesn’t even have to be non-stop; three ten-minute walks a day will work as efficiently too. You will help lower blood pressure and strengthen the heart just by walking regularly. Therefore, try to make walking your daily routine by:

  • Taking the stairs and avoiding elevator
  • Getting off public transport one or two stops earlier and walking to the final destination (home or work)
  • Walking, not driving, to the local shops
  • Walking your children to school
  • Parking your car further from your destination.

As it has been mentioned, regular walking triggers anti-aging processes and also helps repair old DNA. In order to stay motivated, walk with friends or co-workers at lunch, walk your or your neighbor’s dog, join a walking club, use a pedometer or your phone app to measure the number of steps made per day and start increasing it gradually. It is recommended to start off with 2, 000 steps and work toward the 5, 000-step goal. Once you’ve met the desired goal, you may just want to maintain your fitness level or set a goal of 10, 000 steps. Remember, even a little walking is good, but more is better.

However, put your safety first. If the weather is harsh and the streets are slippery, you’d better walk in a mall, down long hallways or on the stairs.

iBeacon With HomeKit – What We Can Look Forward To

iBeacon is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication technology that enables mobile apps to capture signals from beacons in the physical world and react to them. It allows mobile apps to gauge their position on a micro-scale and deliver hyper-contextual content to users based on their location. We take a look at how these two Internet of Thing (IoT) endeavours by Apple will work together to make our lives simpler.

iBeacon on HomeKit

Currently, iBeacon has been largely marketed by Apple for the retail environment. With HomeKit, the home-grown BLE technology by Apple will be accessible to a larger customer base that is setting up a smart home. At its most basic level, the iBeacon will inform Apple’s smart home of the user’s presence when they come home and all systems will turn on as per pre-set conditions to welcome them and ready to use.

Using iBeacon in Smart Home Devices

iBEacon can be used to define actions for the smart appliances such as lighting, ventilators, heating/cooling systems, television etc. among other things. With Siri integration, simple voice commands and spoken reminders will automate the systems and activate appliances. Different apps such as the Calendar app and Notes app can also be used to work in tandem with Home Kit and iBeacon to give commands to the various smart appliances in the house.

HomeKit currently offers native support with iBeacon to control lighting in the house, there is a lot more that can be done if the imagination is stretched. For instance, a Beacon placed in the key will help your smartphone to track they key when it is misplaced within the house. Also, when the key is inserted in the lock, the variously programmed lights will be switched on as soon as one enters the house.

Apple iBeacon for the House

In 2014, Apple submitted a proposal for creating the first dedicated iBeacon – compatible beacon hardware for its Smart Home product. Apple iBeacon will turn the iPhone, iPad or other compatible iOS device into a temporarily discoverable beacon. Thus, used with HomeKit, the user will be able to control locks, lights, doors, security cameras, switches, plugs, kitchen appliances and much more. Apple will not be supplying the hardware for iBeacon as many third party hardware beacon devices are already available. Apple iBeacon will act more as a centralized control hub that can be triggered from the iPhone or iWatch.

What Kind of Smart Home Applications Can You Build Using iBeacon and HomeKit

There are a host of applications that are available for controlling lighting and other basic activities within the house. However, these are yet to be fully developed to be truly effectual. We bring you a few ideas where iBeacon can be applied with HomeKit to create a smart living space.

An iBeacon to notify select recipients of your arrival. For instance, the presence of family members can be detected via the application as they enter or leave the home

Automatically lock or turn off appliances such as computers, laptops or television in the house when the beacon device is not in proximity

Take photographs from the security camera or webcam remotely and email it to oneself by triggering the camera using the iBeacon. This way, any intruders photograph can be captured and stored securely even while the resident of the house is not at home

Turn on the music system in the car or at home to play any specific song when the beacon device is in proximity

Beacons are easy to install and set up and BLE Beacon shipments are expected to exceed over 400 million units in the next five years as per an ABI Research report. With the iOS 10 all set to hit the markets by next year, the use of iBeacon technology will soon be widespread globally.

Broken Hinge on MacBook Pro Laptop

Laptop screen hinges are one of the most delicate parts (besides your LCD screen) on your MacBook. Older MacBook Pro systems are especially vulnerable to hinge damage due to the very thin aluminum that surrounds the LCD screen to keep it in place. First of all, let’s discuss a few ways to avoid having your hinges get damaged in the first place.

Rule Number One:

ALWAYS use both hands when opening your screen. If you obey this one simple rule, your screen hinges and screen support assembly will last much longer. It sounds so simple, and yes, we forget about this important rule all the time, but when you grab your laptop and flip open the screen with one hand, you are flexing your screen in ways that it was not meant to be. Place your hands on either side of the screen and open slowly. It’s easy. Just take a breath and relax before you flip the lid. If you own an older MacBook, be sure the latch on the front is released BEFORE you try and open your screen. It is very easy to bend your screen housing, or worse, break your MacBook Pro screen.

Rule Number Two:

Keep your laptop away from the edge! The edge of the table, the edge of the seat of your car, the edge of your desk…you get the idea. It’s just another simple rule that can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs or parts replacement. Most hinge and screen frame damage is caused by drops – many of which could have been avoided if we all simply keep our MacBook Pro away from the edge of whatever we set it on.

Rule Number Three:

If your MacBook Pro is “parked” most of the time, you can probably skip this one – but, if you carry your laptop around a lot, get yourself a “sleeve” made of silicon, leather or other material that will help keep your MacBook Pro from slipping out of your butter fingers. Yeah, like we’ve never dropped our laptop before. Trust us. You want a sleeve.

Rule Number Four:

Get a good carrying case – one with a decent suspension. And no, we’re not talking about your cars suspension. Get a case with a back that has a suspended inner section for your MacBook Pro if possible. This will keep your laptop from coming into contact with the ground, since we know you like to toss your bag around at the end of the day.

OK, so you followed all these rules and it still happened – your MacBook Pro screen is all bent up, or out of alignment with the rest of the computer. Or, maybe you can’t even open the screen up.

First thing…STOP – do not pass go, do not attempt to open up your screen. There are all kinds of wonderful cables and such that are housed right around your MacBook Pro hinge assembly. These delicate cables can get ripped apart easily, increasing the cost of the repair you are going to get done so you can use your MacBook Pro again. Go borrow someone else’s computer to Google fora Mac laptop repair service. In other words, don’t risk opening up your screen and doing more damage.

When scheduling your laptop repair service you want to be sure to ask these questions:

Do you use Apple certified repair technicians? (YES)

How long of a warranty do you offer? (AT LEAST 1-YEAR)

Do you offer free shipping for repairs? (YES)

How long will the repair take? (24-HOURS)

Are you working out of your garage? (NO)

Do you offer toll-free customer support where I can speak to a human being? (YES)

We hope these tips help to keep your MacBook Pro running safe and strong. If you do wind up with a defective hinge or screen that needs replacement, you’ll at least know some important questions to ask when scheduling your repair.

Welding Jobs And Low Pay: (And 3 Things Can You Do About It Now)

The average welder is now 56 years old.

Young people are not becoming welders because the welding shop in school has been replaced by a computer room (which is crazy, because welding is the glue that holds our world together).

At the same time, a real and sustained boom is beginning in the USA for many reasons – a boom that will last 20 years – a boom that will be screaming out for (and paying big bucks for) welders. Why will the boom happen? What can you do to make $100 an hour? Why are welding wages still so low? Get the answers here.

What is good about welding?

Welding is one of a few crafts or trade crafts that can be utilized in a long list of other trade crafts and locations that don’t normally come to mind. For example: I started welding at 13 to repair motorcycles and cars.

At age 19 I was building gates (gates that are still there and beautiful 40 years later). I became an industrial electrician and welded as an electrician. Artist use welding.

Injection molds used to made plastic parts, are repaired by welders. Stainless piping in food grade factories are installed and repaired by welders. And there are some welders who make $100 an hour doing these and other specialties in the welding industry…

Why are the prospects better than ever for welders?

The boom is under way. It is the oil and gas boom – oil is being extracted by new technologies is such large volumes, the USA is once again the # 1 world producer.

Manufacturing is coming BACK to the USA.

The 3D Printer and other new technologies and the cost of labor in China: it is driving manufacturing home for good. By 2020 the hourly rate for a Chinese worker will be $6.43 an hour.

China will soon more expensive than the USA for Manufacturing.

Few people understand that American workers are 3 times more efficient than Chinese workers. Add in the cost of shipping to the USA and it is easy to see why the U.S. will add 2,000,000 (two million) manufacturing jobs by 2020.

What 3 things can you do to make sure you are a highly paid welder?

Highly Paid Welder Action One:

Start or upgrade your welding career by mastering the hardest and oldest welding process FIRST. Stick or SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) is about 100 years old and is the hardest process to master. It came into it’s own during World War Two because it was adapted to ship building – it allowed Kaiser Steel to build a new ship every 3 days – no wonder the Germans lost!

In some circles, stick welding is considered to be a Dinosaur. Don’t listen to that! It is easy to set up and very portable. It is extremely durable because it is simple. It can be used in a light breeze – most other processes cannot. It can weld just about anything. And you will have more opportunities to earn more money.

Highly Paid Welder Action Two:

Discover welding pipe with stick. Pipe welders are the king of the hill in welding. They make the most money – and they do it for the least work. Don’t get me wrong, pipe welders work hard. However, good pipe welders don’t prepare pipe. They don’t grind. There skill is valuable enough that they often sit in the truck until the next joint is ready. They can’t be risking injury doing anything less than welding pipe.

Highly Paid Welder Action Three:

Get your own rig. A welding rig is a truck with a welder on it. A good rig includes all the supporting tools, cable reels and more. A welder with a rig is a rig welder. A rig welder will make more money because companies will rent your rig and employ you at the same time. Rig welders generally earn $65 to $150 an hour.

Being a rig welder is also a flexible move.

Think about it – a welder without a rig (welders without a rig are called a “single handers”) can also accept work as a single hander – they just park their rig and weld with the company welder if that is how the job is structured. However, when a company needs to rent rigs, a rig welder is the best solution – and the welder who owns a rig can fill the bill. The opposite is not true (obviously). A single hand welder who does not own a rig cannot take a job as a rig welder.

What is the other advantage to becoming a rig welder?

Managing a rig (maintenance, repair and care) starts any welder into the world of “You Inc” – into thinking logistically and strategically about welding – almost like a business. Why is business management a benefit?

A welder who can manage him or herself (as well as a laborer or two and a welder’s helper) can contract on any federal installation (such as a military base). No contractor license is required. It is not uncommon for a welder who is contracting to make $1,000 a day.

WHY is the pay so low for so many welders?

The low pay many welders experience is associated with MIG welding. MIG is often utilized in factory situations where trailers or lifts or custom construction trucks are made (for example). Why is the pay so low for MIG welders?

Here’s why: If you walk into a factory and apply for a job and you interview well – and they have a vacancy for a welder – they may train you to be a MIG welder in one day.

Typically, any skill that can be learned in one day will not pay well.

With that said, I don’t want to run down MIG or MIG welders in this article. MIG is an awesome process. The low end of the MIG pay scale involves a welder making the same simple, non-critical welds over and over (and you can see why the pay is low).

Conclusion:

A certified structural MIG welder is worth more money than a person welding after a day of training in a factory. Sadly, even the skilled and certified MIG welder will not earn a lot of money. Stick pipe welding must be mastered – and when it is, a welder can earn $74,346 to $200,000 or more a year.
